How to Paint and Stencil a Silver Tray

Once in a while I come across a YARD SALE that has a box marked FREE.

Please tell me I am not the only one that just CAN NOT resist

looking in the box with hopes of finding some amazing treasure inside.....but

no it's the usual suspects. Missing pieces of this and that. I get the strange look from

my dear Husband who tries to talk me out of bringing home my find.

This heavy Stainless Steel Tray or Charger was in the box and it came home with me.

I wanted to see if I could bring it back to life with some chalk paint

and a stenciled design.

I wiped it down with a clean cloth and got out the paint and the wax.

I only needed 1 coat on the top and bottom.

I used a damp clean lint-free cloth to wipe over the high

spots to remove some paint for an aged look. If you take off too much you can

go back and paint again. It is impossible to make a mistake.

After my plate dried I decided I wanted to stencil the center of the

plate, using just a small portion of one of my stencils.

I used BLACK Acrylic paint with a dry stencil brush.

Use only an UP and DOWN motion when stenciling.

After the stenciling dried I lightly sanded over the lettering.

After you have stenciled your design let it dry thoroughly

now you can add your wax finish with a soft cloth or wax

Clean your stencil and brushes with soap and warm water.

Note: This plate will not be in contact with food. For decorative purposes only.

This was a very quick and easy project.

I hope you enjoyed your visit! I loved having you stop by!

  5. Hi Lisa! Love your craft idea for repurposing old serving trays into cute sign!!! I painted a bunch of trays last fall and now use them as chargers ~ another way to use and update something old and make it current. :) Pinned and added hashtags to a couple of your photos to my Crafts and Sewing and DIY boards for you.

    Have a great day,
    Barb :)

  6. Great reuse of silver tray, great inspiration also to dig out some of my silver trays, see which would be best candidate to reuse in same way. Love how this looks with paint on it and stenciled, makes wonderful decoration. Thanks for wonderful inspiration for using something stored away.

  11. Gorgeous. hubz and I drive around after garage sales looking for curbside freebies. Dont ever see em at the sale.
Nothing like a freebie to upcycle.

I need to use chalk paint on something other then wood lol...that tray looks upscale now

    1. Well maybe this is just something I see in my neighborhood. People don't want to be bothered by taking there stuff to the thrift store so they leave it out for free. Yes it looks trashy and most of the time its a sofa or fridge! Look for a box marked free and dig through the Tupperware lids for something good. xo Lisa S
