Front Yard Tour- More Flowers, Less Grass Project

Hi Friend,

Let's start here for a quick front yard tour.

We have a large grass area with flowers

that border the whole yard.

My husband does all the yardwork himself, I am his helper.

I love the grass, but it does need a lot of water.

In late SPRING we had a crazy idea.

We thought removing some grass would help to lower our water bill.

Most of our yard and side area has draught tolerant native plants.

My husband and I removed another huge amount of grass.

We divided some perennials that we already had-

Society Garlic is easy to divide. It is a good border filler.

We replaced the rock border.

Then filled in the area with shredded bark mulch.

By summer...wow !

We love the new look.

Everything continued to grow

We filled in areas with seeds.

Daisies around the mailbox.

Lavender does very well in my area.

We water by hand only when needed.

We like Mexican Marigolds and Mexican Sage

Lots of White and Yellow Yarrow

I love the orange and blue combination-

California Poppies and Nigella (Love-in-a-mist)

Salvia microphyll 'Hot Lips' and 'Baby Sage'

is easy to grow in my area, it can be

cut back often to retain it's shape and size.

I grow lots of Calendula- Pot Marigolds to make salves and body butters

These Gaillardia- Blanket Flowers are so vivid!

On the hill, as we call it- I have Queen Annes Lace,

Rosemary, Calendula, Lavender ....it changes often.

It has helped to get the water bill lower!

Just in time for summer.

Here's the backyard project from a few years ago.

We are happy with the change.

Thanks for taking a tour with me-

xo Lisa S

  1. This is lovely. I know when I'm too old to garden...approaching that now, I will seed all our garden spaces with DNR wild flower/prairie flowers and just let them go. We really don't have that much grass anymore now, just one space for games and family time. Great post! Sandi

    1. Sandi,
I like to pretend I have a wildflower meadow...but just enough grass for my granddaughter to run through. We love to play croquet ! Thanks for visiting and leaving a sweet comment!

  3. This is gorgeous! We've been doing something similar to lessen the mowing and help the pollinators. I started with clover to choke out the grass and it has gone crazy! I'm having to pull it back to grow other flowers as well, but it smells good and the bees are happy!

    1. Jennifer,
Thank you so much! I refused to do a desert rock landscape like so many of my neighbors. I NEED grass!!! When we were kids we made clover chain crowns! Good memories-

Thank you so much! We do have very similar growing zones. I love growing unique plants that I don't see everyday in my area.

  10. How exciting to have all those flowers to cut fresh. Looks beautiful. And saving $$$ on water helps.

  11. I admire flowers just as these. The work it takes to keep them looking beautiful. How often do you need to weed? Seems like when I plant flowers, weeds overtake!
Thank you for participating at Gma’sPhoto! You are invited to share each week. Looking forward to ’seeing’ you!
    Take care and best wishes.

  12. Lisa, wow!!! I love your gardens... We have slowly been taking over the backyard and putting in flowerbeds. ;) Then Hubby decided to build me a greenhouse last winter to replace the small area I had for growing veggies... There's little lawn out there now. ;) Happy to feature your post at this week's Share Your Style #461 for you.

    Happy hugs,
    Barb :)
