My Winter Mantle and a Tip to Memorize Scripture

 Hi Friends!

When Christmas is over

and everything is put away until next year,

I think the house looks a bit empty.

Do you feel that way?

For now-

I like to start with the mantle-

I had made Hot Apple Cider during the Holiday's.

I saved the jug from the recycle bin-

washed and soaked off the label,

used acetone to remove the expiration date.

Then I put it on the mantle with a couple cotton stems.

Hung some beads.

And that's the winter mantle for now-

I usually change my chalkboard weekly.

Starting in January, I'm trying to refresh my memory of the book of James.

I want to share with you a little tool I use to memorize

larger sections of scripture.

I first write out the section- I'm a visual learner!

James 1: 2-4

Next I start to remove key words.

Study by reading over a few times,

then you can fill the words back in,

OR

Keep erasing words until you have it memorized.

A chalkboard works great for this.

As I get older it is SO MUCH HARDER to memorize scripture.

I'm hoping that this may help someone else.

Maybe you have some suggestions to share with me :)

I study with the New American Standard Bible ( NAS )

  2. I had forgotten about that technique. I used to use it in church club a long time ago. Another way is to write down the first letter of each word. F G S L T W ... for John 3:16. You can write it on a recipe card and take it with you to appointments where you have to wait.

  3. This is a beautiful idea and I love the chalkboard! Just yesterday I read a version of those same verses I had never even heard of. It read this way ... "Reckon it nothing but joy ... whenever you find yourself hedged in by various trials, be assured that the testing of your faith leads to power of endurance." (James 1:2-3, Weymouth). "Power of endurance"- yes, please. Blessings to you!

  6. I definitely feel like the house looks empty once I put Christmas away. I like to keep up one garland with a string of lights on it just to keep lighting the dark, long days of winter here in North Idaho. I love how you reused the apple cider jar, so pretty and such a good idea! I love you chalkboard idea too for memorizing scripture. I have a chalkboard in my kitchen that has hung on my wall empty for months! I may just need to use your scripture memory idea with it.

    Love,
    Annie

    1. Hi Anne,
I kept a string of lights up also :) It must be cold in Idaho.
We have friends that just moved there- it's tempting.
I'm almost embarrassed to say how warm it is here. My winter decor is me pretending it's cold.

  10. What an interesting coincidence (When God does a miracle and decides to remain anonymous). Our adult Sunday School class just started a study of James! The situations the early apostles faced parallel some we do today. I have copies of the Serenity Prayer all over my house--and need it daily!

  19. That is a great way to memorize scripture. I love using the BibleMemory.com website/app to memorize because it does something similar with removing every other word (then swapping to remove the other half). It takes me longer to memorize a passage than it does the kids, but it's worth it! :)
